About Us

Christian Church in NC Logo

We are the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina, one of 31 regions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada.

Our local churches have complete autonomy in their governance structures, as well as the order and style of worship. The local church makes its own decision on the calling of ministers and other staff, and owns its own property.

The Region exists to be in covenant partnership with the local churches, providing guidance and resources as needed, including the very important role of credentialing ordained and licensed ministers and assisting local congregations in the search and call process.

Our denomination is not a top-down organization. The local church, the region and the general church all exist in covenant partnership to support and assist each other.

While there is great diversity in the individual churches of our Region, we hold to a common Statement of Identity encompassing the confession that Jesus is the Christ, practicing believer's baptism by immersion, and the weekly sacrament of Holy Communion.

The governing structure of the Region is set forth in our Constitution and By-Laws, called The Design. Click on the file to read The Design.

Statement of Identity

We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.
MARKS OF IDENTITY
  1. We confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, requiring nothing more — and nothing less — as a basis of our life together.
  2. We hold the centrality of scripture, recognizing that each person has the freedom — and the responsibility — to study God’s Word within the community of the church.
  3. We practice the baptism of believers, stressing that the way of Christ is costly, while also recognizing the baptism performed in other churches.
  4. We structure our community around the biblical idea of covenant, emphasizing not obedience to human authority but accountability to one another because of our shared obedience to Christ.
  5. We gather as often as possible for the Lord’s Supper, experiencing at this table — open to all who believe — the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit.
  6. We participate in God’s mission for the world, working with partners to heal brokenness, reconcile divisions, and bring justice to the whole human family.
  7. We hear a special calling to make visible the unity of all Christians, proclaiming that in our diversity we belong to one another because we commonly belong to Christ.
  8. We witness to the Gospel of God’s saving love for the world in Jesus Christ, while continuing to struggle with how God’s love may be known to others in different ways.
  9. We affirm the priesthood of all believers, rejoicing in the gifts of the Spirit — including the gift of leadership — that God has given for the common good.
  10. We celebrate the diversity of our common life, recognizing our different histories, styles of worship, and forms of service.
  11. We give thanks that each local congregation, where Christ is present through faith, is truly the church, affirming as well that God’s church and God’s mission stretch from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.
  12. We anticipate God’s coming reign, seeking to serve the One whose loving dominion has no end.

Affirmation of Faith

Preamble to the Design of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
As members of the Christian Church,
We confess that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of the living God,
and proclaim Him Lord and Savior of the world.
In Christ’s name and by His grace
we accept our mission of witness
and service to all people.
We rejoice in God,
maker of heaven and earth,
and in the covenant of love
which binds us to God and one another.
Through baptism into Christ
we enter into newness of life
and are made one with the whole people of God.
In the communion of the Holy Spirit
we are joined together in discipleship
and in obedience to Christ
At the table of the Lord
we celebrate with thanksgiving
the saving acts and presence of Christ.
Within the universal church
we receive the gift of ministry
and the light of scripture.
In the bonds of Christian faith
we yield ourselves to God
that we may serve the One
whose kingdom has no end.
Blessing, glory and honor
be to God forever. Amen.
